Parenting for Racial Equity Project (PREP)

Raising the Next Generation of Anti-Racists

About the Program

The Parenting for Racial Equity Project (PREP) is a six-week workshop series designed for white parents and caregivers who are ready to raise children committed to racial equity. Each 90-minute session supports families in developing the knowledge, tools, and confidence to talk openly about race, examine their privilege, and take meaningful action.

Led by Sommer Blair, MSW, LISW-CP, a doctoral researcher at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP), PREP is rooted in the belief that white families have a responsibility to disrupt systems of racism—not only in public but in their homes.

PREP builds upon the successful models of Parenting While Black (PWB) and the Racial Equity Consciousness Institute (RECI). Developed in collaboration with racial socialization and equity experts Dr. James Huguley and Ron Idoko, PREP launched in Spring 2024 with funding from Pitt’s Year of Discourse and Dialogue initiative.

Core Program Topics

- Building Positive Racial Identity: Helping parents develop and support anti-racist values and identities in themselves and their children.
- Embracing Racial Diversity & Empathy: Deepening conversations, confronting bias, and learning from diverse lived experiences.
- Creating a Culture of Dialogue: Encouraging ongoing family discussions around race, school and community decisions, and actionable commitments.

What Participants Are Saying

“Because I’m a White woman, it wasn’t on my mind very much to talk about race. PREP helped me not feel fearful—and to be open and direct when I speak to my child and even in front of others.”
— PREP Participant, 2024

“I’m coming away with more information related to child development and race than I’ve ever come in contact with. I wish I’d known this when my kid was younger—but I’m grateful to know now.”
— PREP Participant, 2024

Community Partnerships

PREP’s in-person cohorts have included local collaborations, such as a cohort supported by North Hills Progressive Neighbors. Future cohorts will continue to partner with grassroots and regional organizations to expand reach and deepen impact.
